So I'm looking at all the stuff that's going on next week, what with P coming back to town, the projected hegira to Newport News and thence to Otakon with [livejournal.com profile] onsenmark, and whatever the heck is going to happen over the 4th of July*. P will be arriving in town on Monday; not sure when she's shipping out to Minneapolis for Convergence, but I would assume Thursday since that's when the new five-day version kicks off.

Piled onto this will be a flurry of bill-paying and shopping in mid-week, since (hopefully) I'll have my unemployment payments resuming on the 29th followed by the big check from the Alexandria City Public Schools the next day. Most of that will go for rent, of course, phone payments and other utilities, but there will be a little extra cash to do fun stuff (like a.f.u. no Breakfast) which is all I really need to keep my head away from the Slough of Despond.

One of my friends hasn't been so fortunate. It's been a tough stretch for her lately, what with ongoing physical and emotional problems even before her pet died, and I'm going to make the effort to reach out and at least say hi; since she lives on the other end of DC, I don't know that I'll actually be able to stop by in person, but on the other hand, it looks like I'm going to be driving up to Baltimore a couple times next week, so stopping off in between isn't completely out of the question.

I've started A Feast For Crows and am already wishing I'd waited to read A Storm Of Swords first; there's been quite a few references to things that have happened in the South, which is the half of Martin's original third book covered in the latter. As for Gormenghast...wow. It's certainly living up to its dual forewords by Anthony Burgess and Quentin Crisp who bang on for about a dozen pages in toto about how unique Peake's work is. I don't think I've read anything quite like this before. Not even Lovecraft comes close to the sheer weight of descriptive prose used on the COMPLETELY FUCKING BATSHIT inhabitants of this here castle. I'm going to keep plugging on; it makes good reading while I'm playing Farmville In Space and trying not to get ganked by random assholes wandering through Goonswarm space.

Probably one of the worst things about being unemployed, as I may have mentioned before, is that you've lost the externally-imposed structure that gives some order to your life, and if you're not very disciplined,* losing that structure can really mess you up. To cite just one example of this, since you don't have to get up early in the morning to be at work by 0800/0900, there's nothing to keep you from staying up late at night doing nothing in particular or hanging out online with e-migos from the Mountain states or the West Coast. And then you sleep in until 1100/1200, and stay up later the next night...and the next thing you know, your sleep cycle is exactly backward from everyone else's. That makes it hard to deal with the rest of the world, which is still running pretty much on a 9-5 schedule.

In my particular case, screwing with the sleep cycle throws me off my proper dietary habits because I get tired and stupid and eat stuff I shouldn't in large quantities. Then the BG goes up and the weight goes up, and Bad Things happen. That's been the story of this weekend, starting on Friday with a trip to Costco while I was in Fatigue State 4, a late-night strategic op with Goonfleet (we all died, op success) and a Saturday spent mostly in a semi-catatonic state playing Farmville In Space. So the weight is up 15 pounds from its low point back at the beginning of April; fortunately nothing else is out of whack. Except for my head, and I'm working on that.

The lack of cash flow means that I probably won't be going up to Balticon again this year, whether or not they're doing a memorial to Richard. Yes, bin Laden may be dead, but gas is still around $4/gallon and I still don't have a job. Thanks for nothing, President CarterObama.

Got an 89 on my last Government & Nonprofit Accounting test, which means I passed the course; results for Auditing will probably show up today or Monday. I'll going in for my last Management test then, will be turning in some essays and a project as well, and that'll be it for the semester. Summer semester starts next week, IIRC, but I only have one class and it's online. We'll see how that goes.

The weather was pretty decent for a couple of weeks, but it's gone back to being hot & humid for a few days. Makes it hard to motivate myself to pack up the laptop and go out to one of the local libraries or to the Alexandria campus to help maintain the illusion that my full-time student gig is like work. Speaking of the student thing, I'm making definite progress at digging myself out of the hole I got into by being a depressed slack-ass in July and August. I am very nearly done with the Principles of Accounting course that I should have finished; I have the computer project, homework, and the final exam to get done and am confident that I can knock them out this weekend. As for Law, I have three chapters to skim over, posts on Blackboard to make, and I think some other trivial scribbling to do before gearing up for another paper. Then I can turn my attention to Statistics, Government & Non-Profit Accounting, and similar wild delights.

While I am whaling away at the studies, I'm not getting much else done around here. Cataloging all my books in LibraryThing has stalled for now, since I am using my Copious Free Time (sic) to keep up with stuff in EVE, where I am more or less the head of EW training. Getting a couple of my Badgers blown up this week due to inattentiveness/stupidity hasn't helped. It's funny, I finally bought a copy of Bioshock a few months back (June?) but haven't played it hardly at all. I've also been avoiding the flash games on Facebook, as those are enormous time sinks. Thanks to consolidating my e-mail with Thunderbird, I have been doing more surveys, and this is helping the cash flow a wee bit.

The H&R Block tax class continues to go well. I'm very very glad I took the Principles of Federal Taxation courses over the summer; the grounding those provided into why the law works the way it does, and the familiarization with parts of the 1040 I hadn't worked with before have been immensely helpful in the Block class. Also, I love the tax prep software. Not as glitzy and shiny as TurboTax, but it gets the job done as long as you are moderately methodical and careful to punch in the right information. Booya.

Finally finished the second unit in ACC212; going to try and get the third unit done later this week and (if at all possible) the last unit before classes start next week. I wanted to kick myself after finishing the unit; it's mostly about financial reports and various ratios used to estimate the health of a company, none of which are unfamiliar to me, and I really shouldn't have put it off so long.

Blood sugar and weight seem to be dropping off again, most likely because for the last few days I've been keeping the calories under 3000 and the (net) carbs under 50. I'm also trying the Greek yogurt again, this time not from Yoplait but from FAGE and Chobani. FAGE has a 2% lowfat yogurt with a lot more protein and way fewer carbs than the Yoplait version (WTF is the high fructose corn syrup in there for?) while the Chobani is nonfat but also has the higher protein. Looking forward to ordering some liquid sucralose (Splenda) so I can do some interesting high-fat/low-carb things with cream cheese, heavy cream, and maybe peanut butter, if I can find any peanut butter around here that isn't loaded with sugar and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I rewarded myself for finishing the second accounting unit by installing and playing some Bioshock. Couldn't play much of it; I don't do well with first-person shooters on the PC, and this game is no exception. The motion sickness gets aggravated by the fantastic art; the map is so detailed, it makes me wish there was a mode where you could just walk around Rapture as a tourist.

Last and almost certainly least, I've risen (if that's the word) to head of the nascent EW special interest group in Goonfleet. We haven't really had the opportunity to do much besides tag along on strategic ops, practice doing separate warpins, and make nuisances of ourselves by jamming friendlies, but it's good training. Something interesting may yet come of this.
wombat_socho: Wombat (DC)
I'm pretty fried right now, which isn't too surprising since I woke up this morning at 0430 after only four hours of sleep and spent most of the day in tax class, after which I came home and went online for a Goonwaffe fleet op that lasted about three hours. Op was a success from my POV; the handful of EW ships I led all came back intact, got jams on a lot of targets, and so it was a complete success.

The heat was pretty intense today. Apparently the weather people were saying it felt like 115 out there between the heat and humidity. I didn't bother looking. After a certain point that knowledge just doesn't help.

I've been spending some time over the past week adding nodes to Everything2, which is like Wikipedia only with more silly and no pretense of objectivity. This is the node I posted this morning; so far, this is the most popular. People seem to like what I'm writing, but at the same time they're good about suggesting changes or pointing out mistakes. It's all good, and fills the itch to write that got left unscratched after I gave up on the Beltway Baseball blog.

Going to assemble a salad, take drugs, shoot up, and go to bed. It's been a really long day.
wombat_socho: Wombat (DC)
And that's one weekend of the tax class down. Homework and the first research paper are due next Friday. It went very well and very quickly; we were out of there around 1530, which was Good.
OHGOD EVE stuff )
Went out for wings and a Walmart run tonight; going to breakfast with P in the morning, so imma post this and then go crash.
wombat_socho: Wombat (DC)
Got the results of the first AC211 ( Fundamentals of Accounting) test back tonight; scored a 91. This made me feel better about showing up an hour early for class and then realizing I'd grabbed the study guide instead of the actual text. Welp. I'd already read chapters 6 & 7, done the assigned homework (and brought it along), so I was in pretty good shape. Wish I'd felt better, though; despite a full night of sleep, I was very tired during the drive out to Annandale and nodded off for a little bit once I got into a parking space. Didn't really wake up until after I'd put down a couple bottles of Lipton's Diet Green Tea (which is like drinking 3.2 horse piss after the glorious experience that is Arizona Diet Green Tea) and even then I wasn't really feeling too alert.

Finally got my former sponsor's character back into GoonfleetWaffe yesterday in time to fit out a covops, go on an afternoon raid led by our Am0k brosefs which resulted in a nice bump to our collective K:D ratio even though everybody died. I would probably have been more useful in an interceptor, since I never got called on to do the sneak & peek thing that covops frigates do so well, but I'm getting my loss reimbursed anyway, so w/e. Had fun, would x up again.

Back in real life, I got my weight down to 382.6 over the weekend, but portion control failures have wanged that good and hard. As of this morning, I'm back up to 385.8 (ugh) but my BG numbers have been pretty good all through this. I just need to stop pigging out on nuts, which for me are kind of like potato chips - I can't eat just one ounce and let it go. Going to have to learn how, though.

On the other hand, my friends who hosted me for a weekend in Ocean City last summer found the sunglasses I lost, so I'll be seeing them (and the sunglasses) tomorrow night at Mango Mike's, a Caribbean joint across Duke Street from Foxchase that I've managed never to visit in the 2.5 years I've been living here.

On a number of fronts, actually, but I think I'm going to start with the ongoing battle of the bulge, because that's going really well and I'm pretty pumped about that. This morning's weigh-in found me at 388.6 pounds with a BG of 103, both of which are good. Ah, who am I kidding? The weight is AWESOME. Last month at this time I was at 396.6, and now I'm just 3.6 pounds away from the goal for May 30. The BG could be lower, but considering I've cut my daily metformin dose by 20% (down to four 1000mg pills from five; dropped the lunchtime pill) and my insulin dose by over 50% (down to 22 units at nighttime from 24 in the morning and 30 at night) I think I'm doing pretty well. Working on tweaking the diet so that the BG will drop some more and I can knock off some more of the insulin, and I think I'm going to be able to do that a few more times by the end of the month.

So, pretty big wins on the DIABEETUS front. Less important but still good - finally finished installing all the ancillary software needed to be a fully participating member of Goonwaffe, so now I can shit up Jabber and Teamspeak with the worst of them .Well, not so much, really. I mostly use Jabber to IM family and friends, and unlike some Goons who hang out in Teamspeak all the time, I only use it for fleet ops. Unfortunately, my main is on the wrong end of the map for those, and my alt is running missions in Minmatar space trying to replace all the cash lost by flying moderately expensive ships into gatecamps on the way to Curse.

Nationals are still in second (although I see the Fish have caught up with us) and my fantasy team is in fourth, two and a half points behind the best of the robot teams. P, [livejournal.com profile] digex, and possibly some other local folks are going to the Nats v. Mets game on Thursday night; it's Camo Cap night, and I for one plan on getting there early enough so that I actually get one.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
Yeah, I resubbed. I miss blowing things up and interacting with goons online. [livejournal.com profile] thaadd is making noises about coming back too.
A lot of drivel about EVE stuff )
wombat_socho: Wombat (DC)
I have another test game tonight, which I'm looking forward to, hoping I can get it done better than the two I did earlier this week. (F*ck Tony La Russa. Seriously.) It's been a pretty busy day aside from baseball; went out to pick up my textbooks from the Annandale campus for the first half of my introductory Accounting course, then hit Walmart for some things, and finally stopped at the storage locker to take care of that bill for P, who is experiencing some financial fuckery at the moment.

The day got a late start since I was out late last night with P, who had flown in from SFO around midday; we were going to enjoy chikuns at the Buffalo Wing Factory in Reston, but after they completely ignored us for 20 minutes, so we up and left for the Chantilly BWF, where the service didn't completely suck. In fact, it didn't suck at all. They greeted us promptly, seated us immediately, and the waitress came by to take our drink order almost immediately. Complete win. Unfortunately it was the day of their all you could eat wings/fingers/fries special, and I had way too many of their grilled chicken fingers - which are actually split chicken breasts as best I can tell. Weight and BG were up this morning (big surprise) and after drinking a couple tall glasses of ice tea I couldn't sleep, either. Wound up downloading music and the EVE client, (and the drivers for the graphics card today so the client would actually run) so I'll be doing some internet spaceships now and again. Not like I was last summer/fall, since I have other and more important stuff going on, but it'll be good to blow stuff up online again.

I'll be picking up the rest of my books on Monday from the Alexandria campus bookstore, and the financial calculator I ordered from Newegg should also be here early in the week, at which point I'll pretty much be ready for school. Weird to be going back to community college after all these years, but it's the most sensible way to get to where I want to be.

Yesterday was pretty busy, mostly with medical stuff. Got measured for custom support stockings, which will help a lot with the venostasis ulcers that have been plaguing me for about five years now, and the folks at the vascular clinic seem happy with the improvement in my right leg. Booyah. Another four weeks of Mepilex, Kerlix and ace wraps, and this one too should be whipped.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
Lowsec is not empire. Neutrals can and will gank you just like zero-sec. Especially after you bought that shiny new BC and forgot to insure it.

also, stop playing EVE at 0430.
wombat_socho: Wombat (DC)
I can handle it just fine, myself, and the Sportage can four-wheel it through the piddly little 2-6" that we've been getting most of the time down here in DC. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people whose idea of snow driving is to take their 2WD sedans out, turn on their hazard lights and high-beams, and putter along at 30 MPH in the left lane. On the Beltway. I admit for about fifteen minutes this evening I was praying for a semi to experience brake failure so that one such ignoramus would be removed from the road, if not the gene pool. Same goes for people in Cooper Minis and Smart cars. GTFO. All of you.

I went out in the snow to advise a friend on forming a 501(c)(3), which advice he'd sought since I have actually done this before, or at least laid the groundwork. He mostly already has the stuff he needs, but I'm looking at getting him a copy of ATC's app (sans financial data) as a reference. I'm hoping they won't mind.

Aside from this, major event of the day was the second State of the Goonion in three days, this one by interim CEO Darius Johnson. Darius, as some of you may recall, was our CEO when we took Delve originally, so in a way it's kind of appropriate that he's leading us out of there and off to new horizons. The future of Goonfleet will have a lot more pissing in peoples' Cheerios and a lot less infrastructure, which is a future that appeals to a lot of Goons who felt that Delve and its riches (and enormous revenue-sucking infrastructure) were changing us into just another EVE alliance. I still have some ships and modules in Delve, trapped in enemy stations that I can't dock at any more, but I can replace those. The Horde is saddling up again, off to reap more skulls for the Skull Throne and harvest fresh barrels of pubbie tears.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
Great. We headshot ourselves, apparently. Goonswarm won Delve through social engineering and we lost it because the Goonfleet CFO fucked up and forgot to move money into the right corporate wallet. I got my blueprints out, but most of my ships are trapped in stations that are now held by our mortal enemies in IT. Welp. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on what we're going to do after we get all our stuff out of the enemy stations, so I guess we'll be moving around a bit before we decide where we're going to settle down.

This is going to put a serious crimp in my jewing. :/
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
Or one of their friends, either.
Cut for EVE stuff )
And that's why I didn't maek LJ poast yesterday.

In other news, I woke up late, tired and disgruntled, but managed to get stuff done around the burrow anyway. Going to the clinic tomorrow for my quarterly diabetes update, and am going to stop by the Foxchase H&R Block office on the way back to see what (if anything) is up.
wombat_socho: Wombat (Boss Coffee)
Slept in until almost noon, wiping out my sleep deficit, and spent the rest of the day desultorily fiddling with internet spaceships. Went out to Fairfax for dinner at Malibu with P and [livejournal.com profile] cipherpunk; the service wasn't as good as it had been on previous visits, but the meat was okay and the conversation better, and as [livejournal.com profile] cipherpunk observed, the main thing was dining in good company. I thought P was being excessively apologetic about it, but w/e.
cut for EVE stuff )
Also, if you needed me to remind you to donate to the Haitian relief efforts, you should really consider moving out from under that rock. It may be just a band-aid on the sucking chest wound of ongoing Haitian fail, but it's better than nothing.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
hurfing and blurfing about EVE )

In other news not pertaining to internet spaceships, I got a half-day sub assignment on Friday. Better than no assignment at all, not as good as a whole day. Also, a preliminary run-through of my taxes using TurboTax indicates that I'm going to get about $900 from the Feds and $200 from the Commonwealth, which should come in very handy indeed.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
I think after the recent roles-granting debacle I'm just going to stay away from Goonswarm logistics for a while.

Was going to rant about it but TBQH it's just not worth the time and effort. I will say that if anyone thinks I'm going to hang out in GSOL's Jabber channel like a Mexican illegal in front of the Home Depot looking for work, they have another think coming. Piss on that noise. I have an ammo business to take care of.
wombat_socho: Wombat (EVE)
I slept in more than I intended today, but was there bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when EVE fired up again around 1500. It's verra verra nice; the new graphics are nice eye-candy, and the Territory Control Units are especially impressive with the big ol' Fatbee on all four sides. There's some other tweaks here and there that are meh.

Anyhow, I ran around and ratted/looted wrecks/salvaged until I got the isk I needed to clone jump to Jita and buy a 30-day license, which I managed with about 30 million to spare. Normally I would have been stuck in Jita for a day, but I got ambitious and decided to head for a station two jumps away and load up on skills. I never made it off the undock; some hostile I hadn't seen in local popped my Ibis and podded me before I could say "WTF?" Which was actually quite kind of him, because I wound up back in NOL next to my home station 23 hours ahead of time and could get something useful done.

Logged back on to do logistics stuff but wound up stranded on the wrong end of a Titan bridge and unable to get where I needed to go. vOv

Time for bed; tomorrow will be kind of busy for a few reasons.
