The only problem with this is that a lot of popular music is polluted with social commentary, and I for one get tired of being lectured to by rock stars and folkies about what a horrible country this is.
I'm pretty good at ignoring this kind of sentiment -- I have to be, to live in Berkeley -- but this is still one reason that I listen to a lot of European metal bands. You have to look pretty far to find a song in that genre with more than passing political content, and when you do find one (Epica's "Feint", for example, about the assassination of Pim Fortuyn -- and a damn good song) it's generally fairly unobjectionable. Musically I'll admit it's not for everyone, though.
