"Horus Rising" was my introduction to the 'verse, but a better starting point, since you have some knowledge of how the Grim Dark Future is structured, might be the three "Eisenhorn" novels by Dan Abnett. Nathan sent me the omnibus when I was in Kuwait and I could not put the book down. I read it again this summer.
