I know they won't change their minds, they aren't going to change mine, but many times we do temper each other and clarify the reasoning behind our beliefs.

Amen to that. It's going to be a rough election season, as politics seem to get more and more polarized with each passing year; it's helpful to remember that the people posed as "enemy" by the pundits on both sides can also be your friends, neighbors, and family.
