Gives new meaning to "charm offensive"

Jules Crittenden reports on the Japanese Self Defense Force's new mascot. Too kawaii for words...I guess HALO Kitty might have been less endearing, to say nothing of the licensing issues...

first, the first thing I see is "round eyes" which is just funny, if not really
politically acceptable - those are the lease japanese looking cartoon
characters I have ever seen, and certainly no other nation is prepared with
more characters that would be MUCH more suitable for this duty.

second, this just SCREAMS for some good photoshop action - I mean,
come on!

third, what they say is true, the Japanese (and note here, I love Japan,
it is the most like a different planet then any other place I have been,
and the japanese people can be fantastic one on one), yes, the Japanese
are living in a strange fantasy world in many ways, which is likely the only
way that the handle their living conditions and in some ways factors in
theirr history.

What various cartoon/manga characters should the JDF really use as mascot(s) ?

If you join the military, and you're surprised when they cut your hair, you might be an otaku!
