Well. We already knew [livejournal.com profile] qob was down with this flick, and all the folks that saw it at BNAT liked it, and today Lileks gave it the thumbs up as well, pointing to this interesting examination by Neil Stephenson of why the critics hated it and why Geek Nation loves it.

I'm pretty much sold on it, though I can't decide whether I want to go see it in a crowd or enjoy it on my own .

Somewhat related.

I'm looking forward to seeing it myself. Maybe a group of us can meet at a theatre somewhere and some time after AD.

BTW, I really liked Neal's take on the critics. Yeah, they don't really get it. We don't need more irony in our stories, thank you very much. "Irony" was what prevented Sky Captain from being a great movie. It was a good movie, but it could've been a great movie if the director had played the story straight and hadn't given in to the (cowardly) urge to camp it.

I can't help thinking that this attitude was what ruined the Doom movie too. Sometimes (and especially in action flicks) you have to play it straight and keep your postmodern game-playing urges firmly bottled up, and that's something Hollywood doesn't seem to get on a consistent basis.

... which is one of the reasons I watch Japanese anime. I like emotionally vulnerable, unashamed drama, and they're not afraid to produce it.

I've been patiently waiting for the whole post-modern thing to die. I hate it in art and literature, and I absolutely loathe it in architecture (gnashes teeth at new Guthrie building). Unfortunately, it's probably undead, and will require something akin to a stake through its heart.

You're probably right. Where is the Slayer when we need her?
