Grandstanding?

I don't think so.
First Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid insists that McCain is needed to help secure GOP votes to support the bailout, then he decides that's not necessary. (Funny how he didn't look to his party's nominee for any kind of leadership, innit?) Also, it would appear Teasury Secretary Paulson disagrees, and may have given McCain a "3 A.M. call". There's video clips and links in the Hot Air posts I've linked; no need to take the word of Allahpundit, Ed Morrissey, or myself for this.

Don't get me wrong, I think the bailout is a bad idea and just gives other private sector fuckups bad ideas, quite aside from the stupid political tricks that are likely to be stuck into the bailout bills. But posts like this that blindly take the word of the AP when it's transparently lying aggravate me. If you don't like McCain, fine, don't vote for the guy, but don't be spreading AP-brand bullshit around.

An agreement in principal was reached before anyone got back to Washington.

Which doesn't change the fundamental fact that the AP got it wrong. Not only that, if there's an agreement, somebody forgot to tell the House Republican Caucus (http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZWZjYTllOTk2YTg2ZjQ3ODFmMjcxZmU3YWIyNTQ2MTk=), who are definitely not on board with the Paulson plan.

Funny how there was an "agreement in principle", without the Republicans, and now that the two sides have actually spoken it seems that they don't agree after all.

I'm with Newt on this one...

Funny is one word for it, yes.
I'm hoping McCain stays on-side with Boehner and the House Democrats and kills this thing stone dead. I might even forgive him for McCain-Feingold if he does.
