American schoolkids suck when it comes to math, on average. Avery Tooley has some words of wisdom on what we ought to be doing about it. He also has some thoughtful stuff on coons, gays and Uncle Toms. He also gets a little snarky with folks and has one of the UGLIEST pictures on the web. Just get over there and start reading your way down to the bottom.

Cobb also has some words on the gay thing including a call for a smackdown on Larry Kramer; he also has some serious philosophizing on life going on here.

Math 'n Stuff

Interesting piece. My problem was that my mother was bound & determined that we kids would be good at math because she & my dad were so poor at it. (I don't know if this is actually true, so I'll have to ask my sister.) Did not work, 'cuz every night I had math homework it was a full bore battle.

I'm not kidding, actual screaming, yelling, and table pounding...

Observing my nephews, Charlie seems to be more word oriented, and Cole seems more number orientated, and has a harder time reading. Don't know how well Charlie does with numbers. I'll have to ask Jeff.

Articles like that are a big reason I started following Avery's blog. He does tutoring of kids in the 'hood, so he's real close to the problem.
