I cried. I cheered.
Jul. 17th, 2004 12:20 amSpiderman 2 - five stars, two thumbs up. This movie reminded me why I love almost all of the Marvel superheroes while almost all of the DC heroes leave me cold...because the Marvel heroes are almost all ordinary guys who find themselves in the shit one day...week...month...lifetime, and rise to meet the challenge.
chibitoaster, you rule for suggesting this movie!
Afterwards we grabbed some coffee at Caribou and hung out on a third-floor bench away from all the obnoxious music while we talked about AMVs and the hideous things that happen to rice and wheat and kaiju, and then we wandered out to her car and gossiped and talked about Anime Detour some more and finally realized that she'd forgotten the dealer's room paperwork from this year's con. Oops. Well, it was still a great evening and we agreed we were going to have to do this again Real Soon. There's a lot of good movies coming out, so this may get to be a regular thing. I hope. #^__^#

My one criticism of both of the Spider-Man movies is that he's not witty. At least in all the comics I read growing up, Spidey was always portrayed as the "wise-cracking web-slinger". Maybe they'll bring that aspect into the character for the third movie now that "Tiger" isn't quite so moody.

Date: 2004-07-20 09:05 pm (UTC)The strong point is that Spiderman is the story of Peter Parker. It's not about the league of superheroes, just about a kid who has some amazing thing happen to him. but he's still a kid.
Batman is also good for the fact that he's only human with a lot of really nifty toys. DC likes stories about the heroes, Marvel likes stories about the people behind the heroes, and that's why I think I generally like marvel comics better than DC.
Spiderman, Hulk, Ironman, X-men - they're all about the people and individual personalities.
Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman - they're all about the heroes. We don't get much of their everyday lives or how they interact with other normal people.
At any rate, I'm glad they got rid of some of that Stan Lee/Jack Kirby cheese. When you think about it, it wasn't really witty, just corny. And I think it's much wittier to create a scene like that one in the elevator. Now, that's brilliant!
Think of it this way - they have to cater to non-fans, also, and non-fans will take those one-liners as just cheesy.
