It took me a while to figure it out, since I wasn't listening to the radio much over the holidays, but apparently Smooth Jazz is gone from the airwaves, replaced by what will no doubt come to be known as K-Talk. I have to agree with Mitch that the station sounds like a loser, the FM version of WCCO's middle-of-the-road talk format. Well, at least I'll be able to tune in to Rush Limbaugh at work now, since he'll be in KTLK's 11-2 slot, bookended by a couple of nonentities.

As for KSTP-AM, WTF were they thinking, moving Bob Davis to the midmorning slot? I guess I'm going to be listening to Bill Bennett in the mornings from now on, because this new guy Wally is about as exciiting as cold leftover oatmeal. Bye, Bob; it was nice while it lasted.

I don't get Bob in the 9-12, either. I don't listen to him anymore (I can't handle him that early, I listen to Ian and Margery on 107 in the morning), but he's perfect for early mornings or late nights. I can't decide between giving him another shot or Kevyn Burger (who I used to listen to 12-3 before they switched her timeslot with Dr. Laura). I'm sad that Ron and Mark (my favorite show) only have 2 hours now rather than 3, but we'll see what's up. I'm surprised they didn't just put them up directly against Limbaugh, but I can assume the reasoning -- if you're listening to a 9-12 show, you're less likely to change the channel to a show that begins at 11.

Mischke will be the most interesting, at 5:30-7:30. The last time he was on in the afternoon was when he worked with Vogel. His last evening show (available at mischkemadness.com) talks about how his new show will be different, but he wasn't quite sure how it would end up.

And are you surprised about a Clear Channel station being lame? Programming by committee, trying to make evry station sound virtually the same, with enough bland local "flavor" to make the station sound like it's not a big national pile of crap.

I don't pay a lot of attention to station ownership. God knows locally-owned stations have been bland and flavorless enough in the past...and in CC's defense, they've actually been able to diversify the formats available in most places beyond generic AOR and top-40 country, which you didn't see happening before.

Ah, yes, bland and flavorless. Take a look at the locally-owned stations vs. the CC or ABC/Disney or Infinity/CBS staions, if you want "bland and flavorless". The same cookie-cutter stations nationwide.

I have to say that on the rare occasions that I'm listening to radio any more it's KFAI or Radio K. Otherwise it's just background noise and I don't much care unless they're playing something really hideous.

I'll note that those are locally-owned stations, granted public/community ones, but still...

Yay for Ian and Margery! Now that I'm in a quieter spot in the office I should start tuning in again. Before my neighbors had KQ92 on loud enough to have sound bleed through the headphones while I was trying to listen to Ian so I gave up.
