wombat_sochoThere's a list of worthwhile books over at Rightshelf, which polled conservative pundits recently and got back some surpriing answers. Jonah Goldberg, for example, has four fairly obscure books on politics and Paul Johnson's Modern Times - you would have thought he'd put in a plug for this important and inspiring novel, at least. Fellow NRO writer Mike Potemra puts in a good word for one of my favorites, Milton & Rose Friedman's Free to Choose.
Ben Domenech points to an illustrated digest of Hayek's classic Road to Serfdom which you can skim online, while Horatius of Redstate.org puts in a plug for The Once and Future King and his co-blogger Dan salutes P.J. O'Rourke's Parliament of Whores and Atlas Shrugged, along with Peggy Noonan's What I Saw at the Revolution.
For what it's worth, I don't think I need to read Whitaker Chambers' Witness: by the time I was old enough to be interested in the roots of modern conservatism, Solzhenitsyn had already sold me on one of its root principles by writing The GULAG Archipelago. I do find it odd that nobody included Barry Goldwater's The Conscience of a Conservative on their lists.
