If I were a better writer, I could probably come up with a useful metaphor or satisfactory analogy for the way I feel right now. A lot of local people on my f-list are mourning the death of John M. Ford, who was apparently quite well known in local fan circles not just for being an excellent writer but also for being one hell of a nice guy - two qualities that don't always go together. [livejournal.com profile] qob credits him with being the Godfather of Klingon fandom, while [livejournal.com profile] joel_rosenberg recalls the first time they met, and gives credit to [livejournal.com profile] badger2305, [livejournal.com profile] lynnal, and [livejournal.com profile] elisem for keeping him alive much longer than he probably would have managed on his own.

All that having been said, I never met Mr. Ford and know him only through one of his books, which is to say I don't know him at all. So to the extent I feel bad about this, it's for the impact it's having on my friends. It's frustrating and depressing knowing that they hurt and not knowing quite what to do about it besides offer sympathy and prayers.
