I'm letting another installment in the school post series simmer, since it doesn't say quite what I want it to say yet. I also have laudatory things to say about the DEVO video collection (aside from THANK YOU, RHINO!) and Megumi Hayashibara's Enfleurage CD. I'm also wondering whether I should expand on my comments over on Michael Lee's LJ regarding local fandom...there's a lot to be said about the implosion of Minicon and the balkanization of the local fan community, and I want to be sure that I have my facts as straight as I can get them.

How are you defining

...balkanization? In my mind Quebec wanting to leave the rest of Canada would fit my definition, of "balkanization", but it getting kicked out of Canada (which is what I see in local fandom) would be different.

Just wondering.

Well...having read the HRMP press release a few times this week, I don't think you can really say that MNSTF kicked 3300+ fans out of local fandom, something that just flat out isn't possible anyway. What they *did* do is make it clear to a lot of those people that their presence was no longer desired at Minicon, at which point those alienated fans went off and joined other fan groups - or started spending more time with those groups than they had with MNSTF. Either way, the Minicon membership imploded and the size of the other conventions, most notably CONvergence, began to increase.
