Murdoc notes the anniversary of a king-hell awesome movie. I personally thought the Hildebrand poster was cooler, but to each their own. Agreed, the movie had some far-reaching effects on society. Building on the foundations that Star Trek had laid, Star Wars made it okay for people to be SF fans - before that, being caught reading SF was a surefire way to find yourself on the outside of the "cool kids" group. This was fine with me, back in the day, but a lot of nice people who didn't want to be lone wolves and/or outcasts steered away from the genre, and George Lucas' movie changed all that. I've lost count of how many times I saw the movie; seems I went to the Uptown in DC* at least 3-4 times a month, usually with a stop at Ireland's Four Provinces** down the block. I also remember going to see it at the U of M in College Park with [livejournal.com profile] digex, sitting in the back row and cheering loudly for the Empire. Some things never change. ^__^

*It has its own Wikipedia page. Huh.
*They changed the name! Those gomers!
