R.I.P. William F. Buckley, 1925-2008.
You cannot understate his effect on American conservatism and the Republican Party. Without him, the American conservative movement as we know it today would not exist, and the world would be a much worse place. Eulogies and remembrances here, and the Wikipedia article hits the main points of his career with remarkable conciseness and no snark. I never had the honor of meeting him, but there was no escaping his influence. Not that anyone on the right who wasn't totally insane would want to, mind. :D
