Our best days are behind us? I don't think so. Part of the reason is, as in Europe, the "Silent Majority" that put Nixon, Reagan, and Bush the Younger into office is stirring again. They don't much like the way socialism has been radically expanded, and rather nakedly exposed as a "who-whom" transaction in which the politically favored Ins get to profit at the expense of the unconnected Outs. That may be the Chicago Way, but it's not the American Way, and come 2010 I think we're going to see a political counterrevolution that looks like 1994 all over again.

I hope the Stupid Party has learned its lessons. They could start proving they have by implementing market-driven medical reform, and decimating the Department of Health & Human Services appropriately. Better yet, they should abolish that department entirely and devolve its functions to the several states, but one step at a time.

I think the "politically favored Ins" trump both parties, quite frankly.
Money rules America, not 'Pubs or Dems.
We're all just kidding ourselves - the only difference between the two parties is what lies we get told by the politicians bought and paid for by the banks, health insurance companies, war profiteers...

Populism trumps money; this has been proven in many elections where a well-heeled candidate has been thumped by a better-organized, poorer opponent. Strange as this may seem, I believe in the American people. They are not as dumb as they are made out to be, and they hate being ripped off. We'll keep throwing out the greedy pigs until we find some politicians willing to bust up the trough, and if it takes violence in the streets, so be it. We will not go quietly; we will not lie down.

Poorer? How many Presidential candidates in the last 30 years found the President's stipend to be financially significant?

For that many, how many Senators had less than 6 figure incomes before they ran for office?

You must mean poorer in a relative sense, or be speaking of local politics, where "grass roots" isn't just a buzzword.

Stipulated, that Presidents and Senators usually aren't poor people before being elected. Congressmen, on the other hand...they definitely fall under local politics. And as Tip O'Neill memorably said, "all politics is local".

Thanks for the link! The silent majority is finding its voice again - there's nothing like an overt socialist taking power to rally the troops. How many times must people learn that socialism never works?

Given the poor job the public schools do of teaching history, and the fondness of the "elites" for imposing it on the rest of us, it's a task that has to be repeated with every generation.
