Back to work, sort of
Jul. 5th, 2022 11:52 pmAfter eating four hot dogs, a bowl of beans, and three brats, it's no wonder I picked up two pounds yesterday. I did notch a couple more achievements in Civ by winning with Brazil; came *this close* to getting a science victory.
Paid the rent, paid my $35 to Block Academy, finally got around to copying all my e-books from the external drive to the Kindle (and posted that excerpt from David Drake's foreword to The Complete Hammer's Slammers to HFY) and bought Conqueror from Baen to replace the copy I thought I had but couldn't find on the hard drive.
Took both games this afternoon from Oakland in extra innings; Joe Coleman on short rest went five innings and gave up four runs, but Gelnar, Bouton, and Romo held the A's scoreless until Del Unser doubled off Floyd Weaver and Ed Brinkman singled him home. Barry Moore got the win in relief and Drabowsky racked up his sixth save.
In the second game, Jim Kaat and Pat Jarvis swapped zeroes for six innings until Frank Howard homered in the top of the 7th. Jim Hannan relieved Kaat and promptly coughed up a run, but made up for it by singling Ed Brinkman home from second in the top of the 8th. Barry Moore held the 2-1 lead into the 9th before giving way to Moe Drawbowsky - who blew the save, allowing Ed Spiezio to score on a Campaneris single. Bob Priddy pitched the 10th and part of the 11th before giving way to John Gelnar. Byron Browne pinch-hit for Gelnar but struck out; Jim Northrup got a walk from Cal Koonce and Steve Hovley doubled him home to put the Nats up 3-2. Vicente Romo came out to pitch the bottom of the 13th and set the A's down in order for his first save; Gelnar got the win.
So we're still two games behind the A's and six behind the Red Sox, with whom we have a two-game series at Fenway on Friday, before hosting the Phillies and Cardinals next week.
Picked up more tea, Gatorade, some almond milk, but no hot dog or sausage rolls since they'd been cleaned out of those. I made do with a loaf of white bread. Tonight I had the rest of the hot dogs & beans and the remaining two beer brats. I still have three packs of formerly frozen brats and the double pack of cheddarwurst in the fridge.
Tomorrow I think I'll sit down for a few hours and get through the ethics and tax update classes. We'll see how that goes.
