I tend to describe myself as a Recovering Catholic.

It was in this frame of mind that I recently reread Jack Vance's The Blue World, and it dawned on me for the first time that this was a book that addressed the question:

"If a society's priests were really in contact with their god, what would life be like for everybody else?"

The answer is as alarming as the question; but, being Jack Vance's work, more interesting.
