Wikileaks cables reveal China 'ready to abandon North Korea' | World news | The Guardian:

China has signalled its readiness to accept Korean reunification and is privately distancing itself from the North Korean regime, according to leaked US embassy cables that reveal senior Beijing figures regard their official ally as a "spoiled child".

Seeing the Norks disappear as a nation would be the best thing that could happen this year in the foreign policy field. Well, having the Iranian nuke facilities go up in an enormous radioactive cloud of smoke, yeah, but getting the psychopathic Dear Leader and his equally batshit kid away from the controls in Pyongyang would be a Cool Thing.

I just wonder/worry who would steer NK after that. South Korea isn't interested, I hear from people currently living there. The Chinese moving into the gap would be an improvement, but it sure wouldn't make Seoul very happy.

Officially the ROK might not be interested, and the Koreans in the street even less so, considering the problems West Germany had when they absorbed the former DDR now referred to as Pump It Up, but reunification is a powerful meme in both Koreas, and I think the PRC would rather have an enlarged ROK on the border than the current collection of crazed personality cultists and their starving serfs. We'll have to wait and see how this shakes out.

Wombat understands, and if anything understates - reunification is unstoppable, if there is a fall of the north.

Even as people may say with their mouths in the south that they do not want it,
with their hearts everyone does. it is mythic, almost religious (and actually in
some ways it IS religious) the desire to reunify the Koreas.

The North needs to fall, and it should get about it before it has nukes. A bunch of arty hits on Seoul is bad, nukes are far far worse. China occupying NK is a non-starter, consider the reaction to that idea of everyone else in the region - no no no way.

The logistics are tough - but they get tougher by the minute at this point. If we were not currently completely involved in 2 bullshit wars that were invented out of whole cloth, we would be in far better position to go get this one done, one that might actually make the world a safer place.

The PRC doesn't want to be running the soon-to-be-former DPRK, either. I suspect it's one reason they haven't just moved in and decapitated the Kim regime, the other being that they can't be too sure how the NK People's Army would react to an obvious PRC-backed coup. I don't think too many people who haven't lived over there or studied Korea understand the attitude Koreans have towards...well, just about everybody who isn't Korean. It's kind of like the Japanese attitude towards foreigners, only cranked up to 11, and in the case of the Norks, smothered/chopped/chunked and covered with a really nasty juche sauce.
