Well, as I suspected, what's been sapping my strength and reopening the hole in my right leg is a bacterial infection. Doc B prescribed Bactrim, which I picked up at the local Walmart along with some household essentials like half & half, and we're going to take another look at it next Friday.

So I'm going to try and get the rest of the living room cleaned out today in anticipation of the couch's arrival tonight, but I don't know how much use I'm going to be to RS and Kimbie this weekend. We'll see. The only other thing on the agenda is rescheduling all my fall classes at NVCC and giving them a check for the tuition and fees.

Why We Get Fat is a quick read, which makes sense since it's basically am abridged version of Good Calories, Bad Calories. If you're curious about the high-fat/low-carb diet and its benefits for weight control and diabetes prevention/control, you should absolutely read Why We Get Fat and then hit Good Calories, Bad Calories if you want more about how dieticians and other well-meaning sorts got off on the wrong foot completely.

When I got back from Afghanistan, I was around 125 lbs, which is a little less than I should weigh. Between June 21 and August 10, I gained 15 lbs, because I was eating four meals a day and not exercising. Now I'm working very, very hard to lose 10 lbs and the ONLY thing that helps is low-carb. Hell, I'm not even eating all that much fat either.

I guess I need to cut out fruit in order to do the really hard core weight loss, but aargh, I so hate to do that.

Yeah, fruit is treacherous - all our lives we've been told it's good for you, but most of the fruit you find in stores these days is so loaded with fructose, you might as well be drinking regular Coke. :(

"Eating a healthy diet" is so subjective when you consider that meat animals now eat grains, not grasses and everything is tampered with. I have been eating nuts, some meat (never been a fan), fruit and vegetables. I'm wondering if I should add sprouted lentil bread and steel-cut oatmeal while cutting out the fruit. I've done strict Atkins, but hate it, hate it, hate it.

Well, if you're not diabetic like yours truly, you shouldn't have to do strict Atkins to get the weight off - just shift to foods with a better glycemic index and more fiber. The main thing is to increase fat intake at the expense of carbs, and while most people do this by eating more red meat, cream, etc., there are other ways to do it. Eggs, for example.

Oh yeah, I'm all about the eggs. I had to tell one of my friends that the whole line about no more than 2 eggs a week has been discredited. I've cut dairy out considerably (it's a treat, not a staple) and I mostly eat chicken and turkey.

If you're not lactose intolerant (and come to think of it, even if you are) you may want to look into heavy cream as a sauce base for your chicken and turkey. It doesn't have much lactose in it, unless you're going to start chugging it by the quart. Also, butter! :)
