Ursula Vernon deplores the lack of really strange fantasy. Apparently she's way past tired of the usual elf & dwarf crap, and wants more fantasists a la China Mieville.

Odd that neither she nor any of her commenters mentioned this guy.

Sadly, Lovecraft is too synonymous with horror to get many kudos as a fantasy writer... even though he was definitely one of the strangest fantasy writers to ever slink the earth. I believe people just don't think of him as synonymous with fantasy.

You're probably right, although a lot of HPL's stories give the impression that he completely agreed with Clarke's Law, or would have if it had been written yet. Personally, I don't draw a distinction between horror and fantasy, since the two genres overlap so much - especially these days, with Laurell K. Hamilton's novels about the Faerie Court being a good example. I know people do, though, and in HPL's case the additional SF elements probably make the mix just too much too handle for them.

Philistines. ^^
