I took the pressure cuffs to the hotel, but didn't get around to using them until Saturday afternoon. That was stupid. I also didn't use them on Monday, which was just as stupid...keeping the leg elevated only does so much, after all.

So I did the logical, sensible thing and resigned from Convergence staff tonight, since someone who needs to be sitting on his butt with his feet up really isn't in fit shape to help run a consuite, much less lead volunteers by example. Maybe my legs will get better by Convergence weekend, but only a fool would bet on that possibility; the smart money says that the best I can expect is not to get worse. I'm still going, of course, and I might even volunteer for some panels and some badging...but taking up a staff position would be taking on a job I know I'm not physically fit to do.

EDIT: It turns out that [livejournal.com profile] petsnakereggie hadn't been aware that my legs were so messed up, which means this came totally out of left field from his POV. He's going to talk it over with [livejournal.com profile] danae and the rest of the consuite heads next week and get back to me; seems pretty clear that they want whatever help I can provide. So it's really up to them, and we'll see what happens.

Wombat,
Sounds like you're doing hte right thing. As someone who usually never says "no" to a volunteer gig you have to keep in mind, it's still a labor of love. You need to keep your priorities straight. Volunteering comes after health, work, school. You worked hard enough on the conference last weekend. I'm sure everyone will understand.

If they don't, there's not much more I can do to make them understand.

It must feel really awful. My best wishes for your leg. Couldn't the doctors prescribe medicine to make it better? I remember there were some pills specifically for recalcitrant feet like yours.

I'm taking Lasix to get rid of the extra fluids and Cozaar to do that and help my blood pressure, which is no longer what it used to be. I'm also taking OTC pain meds, but trying not to take them too often...until they master some form of regeneration therapy, though, I'm stuck with the crippled leg veins I have. It's what I get for being a lazy and indolent kid when I should have been running (or at least walking) around, to say nothing of eating & drinking a lot less.

Well, we'll be glad to have any help you want to offer in programming, and I for one have no trouble if you bring a footstool.

What does it take to 'run' the pressure cuffs, anyways? Just electricity? Can you where them and still do stuff, or is it a flat on your back sort of job.

And from a running consuite sort of view - 2/3's of the work pre-con can be done sitting down, it's phone tag and order checking and list making and emailing.

Thanks.

I can run the cuffs off wall current; the plug doesn't even require a three-prong outlet. But I do need to be lying down for them to do their best work.

It's true that a lot of the pre-con work can be done sitting down, and I suppose it's possible that the foursome in charge will decide they'd rather have me work on that than drop off completely, but I'm not holding my breath.
