[livejournal.com profile] jariten has an LJ icon that proclaims "Being a DJ is hard work". I've had ample opportunity to reflect on that while listening to the Greg Ayres mix CD [livejournal.com profile] geekboyonline passed to me...while on one level the technology to do mixes and burn them onto media has advanced tremendously since the 1970s when you had to do this sort of thing with tape and scissors unless you had access to the extremely expensive sound gear in studios, the real work of crafting a seamless mix of danceable/interesting music has grown much more difficult.

The reason I say this is because there's just so much more music out there to be sampled and mixed, to say nothing of audio samples from TV and movies and anime. Then you have scratching and all the other effects. I used to think making AMVs was hard (and it is) but it pales by comparison with the effort involved in crafting a sixty-minute dance mix featuring everything from Dragonball Z and Santo to Pink Floyd, Eurobeat dance hits, and the Numa Numa song...and 'm sure I'm missing at least 75% of what's in there. Yeesh. I can't even imagine trying to do this sort of thing live.
