A multi-pronged regional approach to energy needs makes a lot of sense to me as well. If we focused on building a modern national energy grid that can better transport energy between various parts of the country so that any state can buy/sell power to any other state as needs dictate that would help a lot too. An added benefit would be a helluva lot of likely good paying jobs to support it all. One does have to keep in mind that you'd need a fuel system that could allow a single car to be able to conveniently travel between all the lower 48 states if it needed to. You wouldn't want a car that couldn't be driven everywhere.
