The Road to Perdition graphic novel was pretty damn good. I probably would have noticed the similarities to Lone Wolf and Cub even without reading the foreword, but I'm not complaining. It's funny, but for once it seems to me that the movie actually was better at characterization than the graphic novel, or maybe it's just that Tom Hanks and Paul Newman are - were - such damn fine actors. Capone and Nitti are much less sympathetic characters than they were in the movie, and Eliot Ness plays a role in the book that's completely absent in the movie. No big deal.

I'm starting to get annoyed with John Keegan's Fields of Battle. He begins the book with an interminable chapter about his personal relationship with America, which he clearly loves, but I would have much preferred that he had spent a few pages talking about the essential differences between American and English history and military culture while sparing us the travelogue.
