I think one reason why we get these sorts of improvements is because we're never satisfied with how things are today. I'm hoping that I'm not living in the best days of human history -- because I want the best days of human history to not be here yet.

I agree that the best is yet to come (barring some horrendous global disaster), but the way some folks whine and carry on, you'd think they were completely ignorant of how people lived even as recently as the 1940s in this country. To say nothing of the Third World.
