This has been a busy month, and no mistake…school, making a pre-Thanksgiving run to Iowa City, doing a last-minute cleaning blitz to avoid eviction, and of course the Christmas thing. More fun than a barrel of monkeys on speed? Not really. The only good part, I guess, was that the weather wasn't all that bad and the new Sportage's four-wheel drive works the way it's supposed to, unlike its predecessor, which only powered one side of the truck.
The first semester of classes at St. Mary's is over, and I still owe several papers to the diversity professor and one to the Foundations teachers. This is complicated by all my notes being on the laptop, whose screen went crunch earlier this month - probably while I was stumbling around trying to get this place cleaned up so that we didn't have to change addresses at the end of the month.
While that may seem a little draconian, in all fairness we did have it coming - we had one more cat than we were really allowed to have under the lease agreement, and we had never really finished unpacking and sorting things out. So the place was severely cluttered with boxes of stuff that should have been unpacked and put away sometime over the last seven months. Melody and I, with a lot of help from her friend Joe and a little help from Jamie -who finally came over and dealt with the stuff he left behind at the house when he moved out- managed to get the place cleaned up to the satisfaction of the manager. She's also cutting us a little slack on the pet deposit - we owe them $400 which they forgot to collect and we forgot to offer them when we moved in and signed the lease agreement back in May. It took us about a week to get the place squared away, including one almost all-night session that found me on my hands and knees in the kitchen around 2 AM scrubbing the floor. Cat hair and…stuff. I don't know what it was. We made enough progress to get a slight extension of the deadline from Pearl Harbor Day to the following Friday, and that was just enough time to get it all done. Now all we have to do is keep it straight, which may be a slight challenge since neither Melody nor myself are terribly neat people. We have a tendency to leave things lying around, which we really can't be doing, and an equally bad tendency to wait until the garbage can is overflowing with papers and trash before we empty it out. That has to change, and it will change, if I have to adopt nagging as an alternative lifestyle.
Work is work. I haven't thrown my boss out the 15th floor window yet, and she hasn't done the same with me, though we have a really bad communications problem that needs to get straightened out. Well, we'd need to if I was planning on staying around longer than next August, but since that's pretty much when I'm going to pull the pin, I'm not really too motivated to do anything about it. I mentioned the problem to my old boss Jeff (new boss Debbie's supervisor) while she was out, and he agreed that we needed to deal with it. However, the week after Debbie came back from vacation came and went with nothing happening, and I suspect it's slipped his mind and won't get dealt with until the problem flares up again. It might not for a while, since she seems a lot calmer and easier to deal with since she came back from her week off. Part of that may be due to the fact that I'm somewhat busier with the end of the year approaching. There are a lot of changes to the databases that have to be made, and since New Guy Eric is busy with projects assigned him by the other supervisors in Bank Accounting, I'm the one that gets to do them. It keeps me busy and out of trouble, and that's a good thing since if I don't have anything to do I have a really hard time looking busy.
