In the end, I spent the evening ripping CDs, composing a playlist, and re-reading Grant Comes East. I need to finish unpacking some of these boxes, since I'm pretty sure a couple of my missing CDs are wedged in there somewhere...anyway, no progress in the kitchen tonight. Maybe tomorrow.
A long time ago I put together a cassette tape with a whole bunch of love songs on one side and a whole bunch of breakup songs on the other side. Just for yucks, I decided to do that again with WMP, especially after ripping the three Utena OSTs I have. I'm not sure whether to be depressed or morbidly amused that I have a lot more breakup songs on here than I do songs about falling in love. For your edification and/or amusement, the list as it stands now:
Ain't Got You - Bruce Springsteen
Tenderness On The Block - Warren Zevon
Wicked Sensation - Lynch Mob
Hanging On The Telephone - Blondie
Simply Irresistible - Robert Palmer
She's The One - Bruce Springsteen
Cinnamon Girl - Neil Young
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
From Rush Hour With Love - Republica
Steam - Peter Gabriel
Eat Me Alive - Judas Priest
Take Me To The River - Al Green
Down To The Waterline - Dire Straits
Accidentally Like A Martyr - Warren Zevon
Poison - Shojo Kakumei Utena OST #3
Take It To The Limit - Eagles
Got Me Under Pressure - ZZ Top
I Hate Myself For Loving You - Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
Broken Whiskey Glass - Jason & The Scorchers
Let's Stay Together - Al Green
Death Valley Nights - Blue Oyster Cult
Secret World - Peter Gabriel
It's Coming Down - Cake
I Need To Know - Tom Petty
Temporary Thing - Lou Reed
Action - Sweet
Cuts Like A Knife - Bryan Adams
Sick Of Goodbyes - Cracker
After The Thrill is Gone - Eagles
Sad Songs & Waltzes - Cake
Every Little Bit Counts - James McMurtry
I was tempted to add Metallica's "Master of Puppets", because it could be about a fucked-up relationship gone south every bit as much as it is about drugs, but I think "Secret World" makes the same point with the point of the blade instead of the slamming, brutal impact of the sword's edge. I'd really like to have Judas Priest's "Diamonds and Rust", too, but oddly enough it's not on either of their greatest hits compilations. The whole list probably needs morecowbellUtena soundtrack cuts .
This isn't for or about anyone in particular; it's more about a state of mind.
One of my other Christmas presents was The Best Alternate History Stories of the 20th Century, edited by Harry Turtledove and martin Greenberg. It's a fairly decent collection, though some of the stories seem to be more time-travel than straight alternate history (Sterling & Shiner's "Mozart in Mirrorshades") and Allen Steele's "The Death of Captain Future" is straight-up hard SF. Still, overall it's a decent collection, with Larry Niven's classic "All The Myriad Ways" and Ward Moore's "Bring The Jubilee".
