wombat_socho: the mark (the mark)
People have written small libraries on the effect Johnny Cash has had on American music across fifty years, and I don't plan on adding to any of that, because frankly, the music speaks for itself. Perhaps the best compilation of it I've seen is the new The Legend of Johnny Cash, which covers all his hits and significant songs from his first hit "Cry! Cry! Cry!" to his last, genre-busting remake of the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". There's his duet with second wife June Carter on "Jackson", the humorous novelties "A Boy Named Sue" and "One Piece At A Time", and his collaboration with Kris Kristofferson, Waylon & Willie on "The Highwayman". There's the haunting "The Wanderer", off U2's Zooropa album, and an early version of the apocalyptic "The Man Comes Around".

I guess I can sell that four-disc Columbia Records box set. This is all the Cash I could ever want, really.

That's my temporary job title for the next week or so, since uploads are minimal this time of the month, and TPTB here at the Evil Banking Neighbor are very into the Puritan thing about idle hands being the Devil's playground.

Excessively technical explanation you can profitably skip )

In other news, I drove down to Medford last night through the blowing snow and got a ginormous Samsonite hard-side suitcase for $80, which was about half what I'd been expecting to spend. On the return leg, I stopped at the Faribault Wal-Mart and got a Kodak digital camera, a new hat that actually covers most of my ears, ski gloves (since the hunters' gloves don't really cut it below 20 degrees), and the new Johnny Cash CD, reviewed in the previous post. Forgot to get a new Swiss Army knife, though. Damn. Tonight will be consumed by laundry, dish washing, and packing so that I can leave the apartment tomorrow morning and not come back until Monday evening. I'm thinking it would be easier to drop my big suitcase off at the airport en route to work and pick it up from baggage claim Monday evening, since bringing Masha to work would be a firing offense.

More like drastic revision, actually, since my brother (who is now, IMAO, Undisputed King of All Brothers Everywhere) used previously unsuspected clout to get me into a suite at the Holiday Inn Old Town Alexandria for the weekend, and on top of that reminded me that Mom's car is pretty much mine for the asking since she never drives anywhere. Your sushi is on me Friday night, bro.
