Adopt or sponsor?

Hannah Pool slams Madonna for adopting an African child, saying:

The money she will have spent on the adoption and the money she will spend on the child could have gone to help so many more children in Malawi. But of course then she wouldn't have a cute black child to show off.

Pool is an adoptee herself, an Eritrean girl adopted by an Anglo-American academic couple. Does that make any difference WRT her critique? Would the Material Girl in fact have done more good sponsoring an orphanage in Malawi rather than picking one child to become her own? So many questions, and I don't have answers for any of them. Rachel reluctantly sides with Madonna on this one; me, I don't know.

Also on this day in 1976, Hua Guo-Feng ordered the arrest of the Gang of Four, bringing the Cultural Revolution in Red China to an end; and in 1927, the first successful "talkie", Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer was released...so go out and celebrate! It is a good day to die!
