The ongoing religious war
Feb. 6th, 2007 10:30 amNo, not between Islam and soulless Western secularism. Between PC and Mac users. The UK version of the new Macintosh ads (which may have done more to set back the cause of Macs in America since Steve Jobs' decision to terminate the license agreements with the Taiwanese) has inspired this beatdown in the Guardian. Favorite line:
I'm actually pretty agnostic on the whole computer issue myself; if a Mac does what you want to do and you're more comfortable working with it, fine. If you prefer the Wintel environment because of the customization options and games and office software, also cool. If you want to run Linux or FreeBSD or whatever other *nix that floats your boat, I don't really care. It's just a tool, really.

Ultimately the campaign's biggest flaw is that it perpetuates the notion that consumers somehow "define themselves" with the technology they choose. If you truly believe you need to pick a mobile phone that "says something" about your personality, don't bother. You don't have a personality. A mental illness, maybe - but not a personality.
