Throwaway lines often ring true

Last night was pretty much wasted - couldn't get the wireless to cooperate and I didn't feel like moving Cowzilla back to the living room, so absolutely nothing productive was accomplished, and if you sent me mail, I'm sorry but I didn't see it. I probably won't until tonight. Well, I suppose being prone for most of the evening did me some physical good, but any benefits were imperceptible.

Finally won a Civicrack conquest scenario, leading the Hojo (and their 28 flavors of sushi) to a Domination victory in the Sengoku scenario. I'm trying it again with a different clan at the next higher level of difficulty and have already been wiped out once, but I think I'll be able to pull it off again.

If some of you are wondering where the post about That Hotel and its thumbfingered customer relations went, well, I was asked to lock it, and did so out of deference to the person asking. This does not mean I'm going to start censoring myself or watching what I say on here; it should be very clear to all and sundry that when I post on here I am not posting with my Anime Detour or Anime Twin Cities hats on. I have no authority to speak for either one of those, any more than I do for the Evil Banking Neighbor. All opinions are my own, and I would hope my friends know me well enough to find their balls (actual or metaphorical) and tell me to my face when they think I've said something I shouldn't. I'm okay with people doing that. On the other hand, if you're going to go whine to someone else that you don't like what I posted, it's going to lower my estimation of you from "friend" towards "gutless, backstabbing twerp" every time it happens. That's why I leave the comments open 99% of the time, people. Use them.

You should probably delete this post as well. The only comment I've made on the subject was my observation in my LJ earlier this morning. It's not my decision as to where we go from here. I was only offering advice based on my own mistakes and experiences my friends have had. One friend has even had their LJ used against them in court proceedings.

My thoughts on what I post in my LJ were a general statement of principle, not something specific to this incident, though I will admit I was provoked to say something about it by this business about The Hotel We Apparently Dare Not Name In Public. This is hardly the first time that A has complained to B (and occasionally C, D and E) without bothering to take the issue up with me, and you aren't necessarily "A" in this particular instance.

That having been said, while I welcome your advice and appreciate that you mean well, I'll take my chances. I have posted the truth as I see it, or my own clearly stated opinions on this LJ, and if someone wants to sue me I'll see them in court. I've been in court before. *shrug*

I was citing an example of how one friend's LJ came back to bite them in the ass. LJ is a lot more public venue than we generally think. You haven't said anything that anyone would sue over. However, the Staff-Only section of the AD forum might be a better place for commenting on AD issues than LJ. At the very least I generally Friends-lock any AD posts in LJ.

Personally, I'm keeping out of whatever is going on behind the scenes unless specifically asked otherwise. As far as I'm concerned, it's in an SEP (Somebody Else's Problem) Field.

I guess it depends on the issues. If it's something of interest only to other staff members, or something that I think would be damaging to the convention, I'll either post it only to the forum or just keep it offline altogether. However, in this particular case it was something that affected me personally and could also impact other local conventions. So it goes in the LJ.

As to the legal issues, I have some background on this issue after working as a stringer and sometime columnist for Baseball Weekly (back when it was just baseball) so I have a pretty good idea where the line is.

Presumably most of your con-friends are on your Friends list. Friends-Locking would keep prying eyes that aren't on the list from seeing posts on convention topics.

That would be an incorrect. Not all of the people I know who work on local conventions even have LJs.

I know other people that just have LJs just to read Friends-Only posts that never post anything themselves. The simple solution is to let those people know that they should set up just a basic free-account to read your Friends-Only posts and change their bookmarks. If they don't want to do that, then it's their decision to not see those posts. You've given them the option at least. If posting things as "Public" negatively impacts/damages the con then it shouldn't be done. Whether you take my advice is up to you, but I really hope you do. Thanks for listening.
