Monday outing - great success!
Dec. 4th, 2023 11:51 pmIt's been warmer here in Tonopah these last few days. which is great since it means I don't have to dress in layers indoors and run the space heaters all the time. Still, it's usually cool enough in here that I am wearing the smoking jacket (field jacket liner) most of the time in the evenings.
Today's package from the VA contained Novolin R, which I need like another hole in the head, sterile 4x4 pads (ditto), a couple of tubes of steroids to suppress the itching on my right calf, and some potassium tablets, which I am a couple weeks away from running out of. Weight today was down to 387 and change, BP is normal, and BG has been consistently on the low end of nominal despite my having run out of glargine late last week. I also got an overdraft notice for the Friends of Fission-chan account, which I guess I'll attend to tomorrow, and dropped off John Thiel's check for the N3F account.
Went to Raley's and thanks to the SE discounts and $5 Monday sales I walked out with about $40 worth of eggs, tea, soup, cheese, lunch meat, cream, and bread for $29, which was enough of a savings that I took out an extra $5 in cash and threw it in the Salvation Army bucket. I try to throw whatever loose cash I have in the bucket every year, because I remember very well being young and poor in Minneapolis; there were a few years when if it hadn't been for the Salvation Army, the kids would have had pretty miserable Christmases.
Paid the rent, threw my clothes in the washers in the back of the office, and went back after eating a couple sammiches for dinner to throw the wet clothes in the dryers. All things considered, I probably would have been better off going across the street to Tonopah Station and doing laundry there, because I had to split the laundry between two washers (@$1.75 each) and it took the dryer two cycles (@$1.50) to get most of the load dried. A few things are still damp, but that'll fix itself overnight.
Despite the proximity of the Cannery to the VA, it looks like the Stratosphere is going to be the hotel of choice this week; I can get a room with a fridge for $20 plus tax and resort fee, which winds up saving me $50 despite the lower resort fee at the Cannery. So I'll drive down Thursday for my afternoon VA appointment, hit Sonic and McD's for dinner, check in at the Strat, and then get up at an ungodly early hour to do my morning VA appointments. Hopefully I'll be out of town before the Tuber-in-Chief arrives to fuck up the traffic.
